Micro-D Connectors

Qnnect's hermetic Micro-D connectors (.050″ Contact Pitch) are compatible with lightweight materials like aluminum and titanium, as well as with conventional iron/nickel alloys. These MIL-PRF-83513 compliant DC connectors are used in defense, space, and commercial applications where environmental conditions require an extremely rugged and reliable hermetic seal. The unique controlled CTE characteristics, chemical bonding properties and polycrystalline structure of Kryoflex® allow us to manufacture Micro-D connectors with a 304L stainless steel shell and gold-plated beryllium-copper contacts for excellent electrical performance and environmental characteristics. These hermetic connectors are built for both laser-weld and solder-in applications. We also manufacture non-magnetic hermetic Micro-D connectors where superior hermetic integrity and non-magnetic characteristics are crucial to a component’s design. The connector’s shell is comprised of titanium and Inconel because this metal combination delivers the strength, expansion coefficients and low magnetic permeability required. These metals are joined using our unique explosive metal bonding processes. Pin material options include Inconel, molybdenum or titanium.

For applications where lightweight is a key consideration, the Hermetic Solutions Group manufactures an aluminum Micro-D connector that’s approximately 67% lighter than stainless steel alternatives. The aluminum Micro-D connectors have an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C and uses the Hermetic Solutions Group’s industry-proven polycrystalline ceramic-to-metal sealing technology, Kryoflex, to achieve a consistent leak rate (after thermal cycling) of less than or equal to 1×10-5 cc/sec He at one ATM.

Our hermetic Micro-D connectors can also leverage High Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic (HTCC) technology. This Micro-D connector’s external interface resembles that of a standard rectangular connector, with rows of sockets providing an electrical connection. In this new, patent-pending design, however, the external sockets are mated to a specially engineered HTCC board (that integrates metalized circuit patterns), instead of traditional pins. This approach can save space and reduce wire-bonding complexity while still maintaining the Hermetic Solutions Group’s high standards for harsh-environment reliability and electrical performance. All of our hermetic Micro-D connectors are manufactured to exceed the requirements of MIL-PRF-83513.

The Hermetic Solution Group’s “Mini” Micro-D connectors are designed for space, airborne, down-hole oil and any other hermetic application where reducing size and weight are priorities. They have a 27% lower profile than standard Micro-D connectors and are designed to be laser welded into aluminum, titanium or Kovar housings. These connectors are MIL-PRF-83513/7 interface compliant and mate with connectors manufactured to MIL-PRF-83513/8.
