Stepped and Flat Lids

The lid and the lidding process are often considered to be one of the least exciting aspects of hermetic microelectronic packaging. There are often many technical challenges in the design and manufacture of a new device and, unless a radical new packaging technique is also being developed, the lid seal is often taken for granted. However, Hermetic Solutions Group gets it; we are a supplier that thoroughly understands the hermetic lid sealing process and the fundamental differences and requirements for different techniques.  As a result we have multiple technologies and product offerings to address all types of lidding processes.

Let's work together and identify the best hermetic lid solution for your lidding process!

Stepped vs. Flat Lids

Depending on your hermetic seal process, we offer different metal lid options for your application.

Stepped lids: These are used if you’re using seam welding processes - our stepped lids offer the ideal solution for sealing your hermetic packages. Stepped lids are chemically etched to ensure tight dimensional tolerances are maintained and our chemical milling technique results in an ideal seam welding profile and provides a part free from burrs and residual stress often associated with metal stamping.

Stepped lids from the Hermetic Solutions Group are typically made in Kovar, stainless steel, Invar, Alloy 42/46/48 as well as mild steel. They can be plated with electrolytic or electroless nickel as well as soft electrolytic gold. Generally produced in rectangular shapes in L/W sizes ranging from .100” and 9.5”, they can me manufactured to + .002” - .004 (typical) tolerances.

Flat Lids: These lids are used if your hermetic sealing process is via hermetic welding for package closure. Flat lids are typically stamped using our extensive capacity and many years of experience across multiple facilities and utilize a variety of sheet-metal forming processes such as punching, blanking, embossing, bending, flanging and coining. Our hydraulic and mechanical presses are staffed by experienced operators who ensure these products are produced efficiently and accurately.

The Hermetic Solutions Group has a vast range of open tooling designs on-hand to address specific lid requirements. If necessary, new designs can be produced and manufactured within days of receiving a customer’s instructions.
