Metal Alloying, Casting, Rolling, Slitting

With decades of metallurgy experience and knowledge, Hermetic Solutions Group's utilizes metal casting, alloying, rolling, and slitting to create specific composites or pure metals that support our thermal management solutions and preform manufacturing and product lines.

Key metals we work with include gold, tin, copper, molybdenum, lead and silver among others which will ultimately be stamped or EDM’d (electrical discharge machining) into complex geometries customized to our customers’ specifications across many industries including defense & aerospace, medical and industrial.

This complete metal preparation process is one part science, one part art and one part process control and our extremely experienced and talented team is among the best in the business.

To prepare metals for final shaping, the process is as follows:

  1. If the requirement is not for a pure metal, we must first melt and mixing of multiple metals, creating an alloy. Alloys are a combination of metals or of a metal and another element. Alloys are defined by a metallic bonding character. An alloy may be a solid solution of metal elements (a single phase) or a mixture of metallic phases (two or more solutions). The alloy is created by the casting process where the metals are melted together.  Common alloys that we use in our finished products include gold tin (AuSn), copper molybdenum (CuMo) and tin lead (SnPb).
  2. Casting – is where metals or metal alloys are melted into liquid and may be boiled to remove any oxide contamination that may exist. We then cast the liquid metal into a bar.
  3. Once the pure metal or metal alloy is prepared and cast, it needs to be formed into the required thickness for further processing and ultimately finished parts. The process used is called Rolling whereby the cast metal goes through a series of heavy metal rollers that slowing decrease the initial larger cast of metal into the required thickness. Depending on the requirement it is not unusual that a cast metal could pass through 20 or 25 different sized rolls to achieve the required thickness.
  4. Once the metal or metal alloy has been rolled to the required thickness, the final stage of prepping the material is called Slitting whereby the rolled is essentially cut into more manageable pieces for stamping, milling and EDM’ing. For perspective, a cast and rolled metal or metal alloy could yield 2550 linear inches of more; hard to manage if not slit!

Our manufacturing process is tightly controlled to not only prevent contamination (our metals and metal alloys are routinely tested to confirm the specified chemical composition), but also to prevent waste.  Through the years we have identified different ways and methodologies for ensuring that every bit of metal we alloy, cast, roll and slit is used – we are vigilant in our control of precious metals, much like we are vigilant in the quality of our products.
